Lawfare Project Deeply Dismayed by UN General Assembly’s Perversion of International Law

NEW YORK, NY —  Today, Brooke Goldstein, Executive Director of the Lawfare Project issued the following statement:
“Today was a sad day for anyone committed to the international rule of law and the critical necessity of impartial, apolitical institutions of global jurisprudence and policy.
The Lawfare Project is deeply troubled to see that the UN has once again exceeded its mandate and perverted international law in the quest to delegitimize the world’s one and only Jewish state. In condemning the United States, the leader of the free world, for recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the UN continues on its path toward illegitimacy and irrelevance. It is profoundly ironic — and the epitome of lawfare — that the global body tasked with enforcing international law has censured a sovereign state making domestic foreign policy decisions, which are consistent with law, history, reality — and peace.
Article 2(7) of the UN Charter is crystal clear: “Nothing contained in the present Charter shall authorize the United Nations to intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state.” Today’s General Assembly resolution is therefore extralegal and transparently political.
The UN was built on the principle of respect for the sovereignty of member states (known legally as complementarity), with full awareness that independent nations of the world must make policy decisions in the best interests of their domestic constituencies. The moment the institution begins to attack that very sovereignty is the moment the UN loses all credibility, authority and international deference.”
