Kosher slaughter ban in Belgium
Several Belgian regions have adopted legislation that would make shehita (kosher slaughter) illegal in Belgium. Such a ban would prevent minority faith communities in the country from practicing a central tenet of their religions; create insecurity around the protections afforded to male circumcision practices; and violate the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, the European Convention on Human Rights, and the Belgian Constitution itself, all of which guarantee freedom of religion. In partnership with the Belgian Federation of Jewish Organizations (CCOJB), The Lawfare Project is facilitating legal action to challenge laws passed in the Walloon and Flanders regions.
